Jamel Robinson
Jamel Robinson is a Harlem-born multidisciplinary artist whose practice moves fluidly between sculpture, assemblage, painting, writing, and performance. Self-taught and deeply intuitive in his approach, Robinson’s work functions as a series of timestamps—visual records shaped by the experiences, struggles, and histories that inform both his personal life and the collective memory of the Black experience in America.
Raised and based in Harlem, Robinson draws heavily from the physical and symbolic language of materials. Sand, rope, wood, nails, chains, and other found elements appear throughout his work, not merely as formal devices but as carriers of meaning—objects that hold within them echoes of labor, survival, and historical trauma. Through assemblage and abstraction, he recontextualizes these materials, inviting viewers to confront difficult truths about history, inequality, and resilience.
Robinson’s artistic journey began with poetry, an origin that continues to shape his visual language. Rhythm, gesture, and improvisation remain central to his process, whether he is applying paint directly with his hands, constructing sculptural forms, or creating immersive installations. His work is often physical and performative in nature, emphasizing the act of making as an extension of lived experience.
At its core, Robinson’s practice is concerned with memory—how it is held, fragmented, preserved, and transformed. His works do not seek to resolve history but to hold space for it, allowing personal and collective narratives to coexist in tension. Through this approach, Robinson creates works that are both deeply personal and universally resonant, offering viewers an opportunity to reflect on the forces that shape identity, community, and belonging.
Exhibited internationally and collected widely, Robinson’s work continues to gain recognition for its emotional intensity, material depth, and uncompromising engagement with social reality. Each piece stands as both an artifact and a witness—an enduring record of experience, resistance, and the possibility of transformation

Jamel Robinson applies paint in one of the most combative ways possible: He uses boxing gloves dipped in acrylics to punch and pummel the canvas, producing a visual record that’s a flurry of spent energy.
